The game of golf can be frustrating if you’re struggling to make par every time you play. Experienced golfers understand the outcome of a round depends on mastering the task of paying attention to detail before each swing. It is important to repeat the same technique for 18 holes, especially if your goal is to have the lowest round score for that day’s group. Success all begins and ends with your golf swing.

At first, newcomers to golf might be overwhelmed and confused by the different types of swings required to play. The mechanics of every good golf swing require the same footwork and body position throughout the game. Once you have a better understanding of your own comfort zone on the course, golf will begin to not only be fun, but easy.

Continuous repetition at the driving range will help you find some form of consistency with your golf swing. All instructors teach the same basics of the game, which should keep you competitive with others on the course. To learn a proper golf swing, you must understand how posture, coiling, cocking your wrists, and the swing all work together.

Posture

Individual golf instructors might differ on the setup of a golf shot, but they all agree that having a strong lower body base will help you maintain proper balance. It is important to flex slightly at the knees while your upper-body bends forward at the hips to attain this posture.

Some instructors believe newcomers to golf should have a stance that is both comfortable and efficient at the same time. Remember, your posture should appear to be natural during each shot. If done correctly, your weight distribution should be centered over the balls of your feet. You should also still have the capability to move from side-to-side and maintain your balance at the same time.

Coiling your shoulders properly

Try not to lock your elbows while keeping your arms straight, especially on the backswing approach. Ideally, you want to keep your arms loose and relaxed, as this should keep them relatively straight during each swing. If you coil enough, then your arms should remain straight when your hands reach waistline level. The correct shoulder coil approach should offer you enough power to drive the ball deep on the fairway right after teeing off.

Cocking your wrist

Once you get the proper swing technique down, your right elbow should begin to bend in a downward motion. This is caused by having your wrist cocked, which should help keep your left arm straight while the other bends. The cock of the wrist should form an “L” shape between your forearm and the club shaft. This technique is easier to accomplish if you keep your hands at or around shoulder level. From there, your hands should move very little to reach the top of your swing. However, keep in mind that this isn’t always the best technique and it can change depending on your body. If you aren’t sure you are doing it right, then you may want a golf instructor to help you find the best swing technique for you.

Unwinding your swing

Unwinding your body after hitting the golf ball is important for getting the right distance off the approach. The follow-through of each golf swing must mirror the “L” shape of your backswing. If you keep your club grip more relaxed, then your wrist should be uncocked upon impact with the ball.

During the follow-through, you’ll want to re-cock your wrist as your chest turns toward the target at the peak of your backswing. It is important to directly face the target at the conclusion of your follow-through, so you finish in a more balanced stance.
